Week 6: Best and Worst
Worst:
This image is one of the weakest, accidentally using flash, it takes away the elements of mystery. The flash also makes the image look unnatural. The model is not focused and the smoke is not in the direction and does not incorporate the movement that i want it to. Therefore this does not work well with my theme and ideas.
This is almost one of my weaker images. Again the model is not focused and the smoke is not creating the effect that i originally wanted. However, the main issue with this image is due to my movement and shaking of the camera. This was due to trying to take images quickly because of the short time we had until the grenade ran out of smoke. Because of this, my image was left blurry and did not look professional enough as a final.
Best:
I really like this image, on the contact sheet i did not notice it and thought it was a weak image, however using Adobe bridge as we learnt during our workshop classes, i studied the image again and noticed that the background was quite a nice colour and gave a tint to the photograph. I like how within the smoke you can slightly see the model, aiding the themes of mystery and eeriness and with editing on photoshop, i could make the subject more noticeable whiles still incorporating this idea of her being consumed by the smoke.
Again, this image was one of my strongest when comparing to my theme. Incorporating a shallow depth of field in the background, the spectator is attracted to my main subject. The smoke covers the model diagonally which is think is also quite interesting. The model's face is covered which shed's light onto the idea that the smoke is consuming the model, restraining her from expressing herself, she is left invisible to the world. When editing this image i could desaturate the image much like Christian Benetel's work and also stone clamp the grenade from her hand to make it look as if the model is reaching out desperately for help or some sort or recognition.
This image again incorporates some of the features of Christian Benetel's work, the smoke is surrounding the subject, consuming her, in regards to my theme you could suggest that the smoke is ready to control her and take away the control she once had to express and identify herself as an individual. I like how the background incorporates the sunset and a shallow depth of field. The sun set could also signify the end of her confidence and the darkness is slowly taking over.
I used this shot in my elevator pitch as i thought it brought an insight into my theme. The model's face can not be seen, the smoke is surrounding her, like she has nowhere to go. Again this idea of struggling to fight against this authority and power is intriguing, however i'm not sure if it is strong enough to be one of my final's.
This image is a play on Christian Benetel's image, The Passing, the model is consumed and immersed into the smoke. I increased the focal length of the image to create a close up shot. The smoke creates a mist over the subjects face and creates a sense or eeriness. The model looking down and becoming emotionless can suggest this idea that she is overwhelmed and powerless to the smoke, this figure of power that will take over the model's identity.
