Week 2: Theme Research
PROJECT BRIEF:
Produce a photographic essay consisting of 6 to 8 digital photographs that represent
an individual, group or location of your choice. Your project should investigate ideas
of representation and identity, and consider the importance of cultural, social or
political positions. Your chosen theme must be presented for acceptance by your
tutor.
The initial words that stand out for me in this project brief are:
- identity
- social
- individual
IDENTITY

When talking about identity, it is evident that it is more than just a word. Identity is a huge theme that can be interpreted in many different ways. Identity can be portrayed in a positive and a negative way. In a positive way identity can portray, truth, confidence, love and happiness. In a negative way, identity can explore many themes of depression, anxiety, exclusion and isolation. For future research throughout the term i could explore photographers who explore identity to gain inspiration.
SOCIAL/SOCIETY
Society is when a group of people live and communicate together in a more or less, ordered community. When being amongst a large group of people it may be hard to stand out or express yourself as within a large community, prejudices will grow and form. This can link to the themes of identity as people may no be able to express their true selves as they may think they need to fit in and conform to certain prejudices/stereotypes.
INDIVIDUAL
Again, when discussing the idea of the individual, it is such a broad term that for the brief, it has to be much more specific. When linking to my previous ideas and comments, i could look at how some individuals do not know how to stand out. They do not know who they are or who they want to be. These ideas can lead to researching themes of feeling lost, invisible, misunderstood.
