Images of Inspiration

INSPIRATIONAL IMAGES:

Throughout this term, this blog will provide my research and processes leading up to my final photographic essay. This will be the main source of my ideas and thoughts, because of this it is vital to share some images of interest.  My love for Surrealism over the years has blossomed as i discovered that i loved to create unusual and striking images. I loved to play with the composition and perspective of an image to make an observer of an image look twice. Below are some photographers who inspired my interests in Surrealism.

  • Laura Williams
Laura Williams is a photographer and graphic designer from the UK, specialising in fine art portraits, and digital retouching.  At 18 years old, still studying at college, the young photographer gained mass attention for her viral self portrait series 'Invisible'. Williams' most famous image that sparked her career is her self-portrait below. Using a mirror and photoshop, she created the illusion that her body has completely disappeared.

The significance of the image connotes the mood of not being heard, feeling alone and completely invisible in such a big, busy world. The image connotes the idea of wanting to be hidden, which could draw in aspects of real life and anxiety getting in the way of expressing your true self. The process of taking self portraits is already quite an independent process, this could suggest that even Williams' process reflects the ideas of wanting to be alone and invisible, as by taking the pictures completely by herself, the photographer is able to consume herself into her own world, creating her own illusion for others to see.

  • Ben Heine
Ben Heine, a Belgian artist created a series of images called Flesh and Acrylic. Heine transformed people into living works of art, submerging them into the canvas by covering them with acrylic paint. The main idea of this image is to blend the model with the background, drawing both the model and the acryclic together as one.
Again this image also conveys similar aspects of Laura Williams' series Invisible. Both images hide the model behind another subject, depsite the models being the main point of focus in the composition, the observers are constantly distracted by another point of focus. In this image, the paint explodes onto the model which looks as if it has been done quite vigorously. this could connote ideas of pain and neglect as the model could feel forced to hide behind the paint, forced to become part of the background. Again, this idea of struggling to identify one's self is a theme i constantly look back to.

  • Kevin Corrado
Kevin Corrado is an American photographer, hugely inspired by Surrealism, Corrado creates images that make no sense but contain an interesting and fragmented narrative. His image below titled Lost, displays body parts reaching or leaning out of a mirror. The subject's face is hidden creating this sense of being lost and struggling to find yourself, much like the previous images in this post. Corrado draws on the themes of Surrealism to create a dream like image, using himself in the self portrait he could be trying to convey his own dreams and illusions. Corrado forces the observer to view the image in a perspective that is not always obvious, however the visual patterns successfully combine in a unique photographic frame.
